Jacob DeGrom is one of the best pitchers in the MLB, there is no question about that. But could he be underrated? Well, yes in fact he is underrated. DeGrom has won back to back Cy Young Awards but his record in those seasons was just 21-17 with 2.05 ERA. Having that kind of record leads to a pitcher being improperly rated.
Rick Porcello has always been a high win pitcher. He even won a Cy Young award bases on his record. In 2016 Porcello went 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA. He was definitely not deserving of this award as he received the best run support of any pitcher in the AL. The 3 seasons before this he had an ERA of 4.18 and the seasons after he had an ERA of 4.79, so clearly that ERA was a fluke and that season has led to Porcello being severely overrated and after pitching to a 5.52 ERA in 2019 he got a 1 year 10 million dollar contact to DeGrom’s Mets.
Gerrit Cole is another pitcher who is gotta be in the list of the best pitchers in the MLB. He went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts, but finished second to his teammate Justin Verlander in the Cy Young voting. If you have 20 wins like Cole, old school baseball guys may automatically think that Cole is a better pitcher than DeGrom because Cole has 9 more wins. In this case they would be wrong. Cole had only 6.6 WAR in his outstanding season, DeGrom had 7.6 and the year before that DeGrom had 9.9 to Cole’s 5.7. DeGrom is the better pitcher, maybe this is just because Cole is on the Yankees but I have a feeling that the 9 year 324 million dollar contract Cole got may not give the Yankees the World Series they so crave.
