Jimmy Rollins: A franchise cornerstone, but slightly overrated

Jimmy Rollins was a shortstop for the Phillies from 2000-2014. He primarily hit leadoff and was solid enough for two pennant winning teams and one World Champion. He hit .264/.324/.418 with 231 homers and 936 RBI’s, also scoring 1421 runs and stealing 470 bases in 2275 games. He was a 3 time all star 4 time gold glover and won an MVP in 2007, probably undeservedly.

That year he hit .296/.344/.531 with 30 homers, 20 triples, 38 doubles, 94 RBI’s and he went 41-6 on the bases. From 2001 to 2009 he was a pretty good player averaging basically his 2007 numbers with 10 less triples and 15 less homers. His slash stats were a little worse as well so he wasn’t what you would call the prototypical leadoff man.

In 2008 when the Phillies one the World Series he had a career high OBP at .349 and went 47-3 on the bases arguably his best season as a leadoff man. J Roll was loved in Philly until the end, and you could make an argument that he was the best shortstop of the 2000s. Thanks for reading.
