Pedro Martinez, One of the greats Pt. 2

If you are talking about the best pitchers of all time, Pedro has to be in the conversation. He pitched in the era known for hitters and homers and he still put up all time numbers. For his career he was 219-100 with a 2.93 ERA pitching 476 games starting 409. He struck out 3154 in 2827 innings. He was a x8 all star and won 3 Cy Young Awards one with the Expos and two with my beloved Sox.

From 1997-2003 he was the best in baseball. He averaged 21-7 per 162 with a 2.20 ERA and 300 strikeouts in 240 innings per 162. At this time the league averaged ERA was well over 4.50. Pedro had two seasons of below 1 and every season during this stretch he was below 3, his highest being 2.89 his lowest 1.74. He won a World Series with Boston in 2004 and lost one with the Phillies in 2009.

He had a little bit of injury issues during his career. He didn’t pitch more than 132 innings for the last 4 years of his career. Even in his prime he would spend time on the DL frequently often starting only 30 or so games. Pedro was one of the best, when he got his ring I was a very happy Sox fan. Sadly in this shortened season the Red Sox have been one of the worst teams in baseball. Incredibly this season the Red Sox sorry excuse for a pitching staff has allowed as many runs as Pedro did in his prime years of 1999-2001. Thanks for reading.
