Baez or Story: Best Shortstops in the NL

Trevor Story and Javier Baez are the consensus 1 and 2 ranked shortstops in the Major Leagues. They have both had 4 seasons as a regular, Baez had two short terms before that while Story was immediately a regular with the Rockies. They are both excellent defensively and are legitimate power-speed threats. In my opinion Trevor Story is much better. I am going to compare their worst and their best seasons that they have had.

In 2017 Story had the worst season of his career to date. He played in an 145 games, hitting .239 with 24 home runs and 82 RBI’s, he only stole 7 bases and struck out a whopping 191 times. He walked 49 times for an OBP of .308 and his total bases added to a .457 slugging for a .765 OPS. He was very good defensively for a dWAR of 1.8 and a FRAA (fielding runs above average) -0.4. His overall WAR was 2.6.

In 2016, Baez’s worst season he played in 142 games, hitting .273 with 14 home runs and 59 RBI’s. He stole 12 bases and scored 50 runs. He walked only 15 times for an OBP of .314 his total bases added to a .423 slugging for a .737 OPS. He was also excellent defensively for a dWAR of 1.6. His overall WAR was 2.8. I think we can give this one to Baez, he was more valuable to his team, got on base more and stole more bases.

Story had his best season in 2019, playing in 145 games and hitting .294. He had 35 home runs and 85 RBI’s, he stole 23 bases and scored 111 runs. He walked 58 times for an OBP of .363 and his total bases added to a slugging percentage of .554 for an OPS of .917. He was excellent defensively with a 2.1 dWAR and -0.3 of FRAA. His overall WAR was 6.1.
