Yesterday had two of the best full games of soccer I have ever watched. The two games were Spain V. Croatia and Switzerland V. France. The first game had it all from an insanely stupid own goal, to some of the best goals from open play of the tournament. Croatia’s golden generation is aging, while this new Spain team is still proving itself. The game was 3-1 late in the second half when Croatia broke through to score 2 to send the game to extra time. In extra time, the heavily criticize Alvaro Morata scored an outstanding goal, the touch and finish were perfect and he gave Spain the lead. This effectively ended it as Luka Modric and Croatia looked defeated, Spain would grab one more goal before it was over and defeated the Croats 5-3. This was only the beginning of the great soccer of the day.
In the second game between Switzerland and France, it started going the way of the Swiss as they scored a brilliant header to take the lead early in the second half. Soon after they were awarded a penalty but Ricardo Rodriguez shot it into the strong dive of Hugo Lloris and the game continued 1-0. Didier Deschamps, the France coach, called upon the character of Karim Benzema to try to tie the game. He then scored 2 goals within 5 minutes of entering the game giving France the lead. His brilliant touch led to a great finish on the first, and some Kylian Mbappe magic assisted the second. With a missed penalty and some fresh legs the French were rejuvenated. Then Paul Pogba scored the best goal of the game, a dipping, curling strike from well outside the box and it found its was top corner and it was 3-1. But the French had looked shaky in defense the entire game and Presnel Kimpempe and Raphael Varane did not have a good last 20 minutes, the Swiss struck with 2 goals to tie the game eerily similar to the Croats and it was tied at the end of regulation. The extra time period had a few solid chances but nothing compared to what was coming in the penalty shoot-out. The shooters went back and forth cracking shots past Yan Sommer and Lloris until the young star in Kylian Mbappe. Having not had a great tournament this was his moment to squander and squander it he did. He shot a mediocre penalty to the left of Yan Sommer and Sommer made a great save to win the game for the Swiss. The World Champions France are eliminated quite early and the underdog Swiss, a team favorite of mine now after this incredible showing are moving on. This is the upset of the tournament and possibly of the last couple major tournaments in Europe.
