From the start of the 2021 season, Rafael Devers has had to prove himself. Like a lot of star players was coming off a down season in 2020, and his defense had been heavily criticized as the Red Sox had a pretty down season. But this year it has been different, he is leading AL third basemen in All Star votes and also leading in something far more important WAR or Wins Above Replacement. As of June 28th he is hitting .283/.349/.577 with 23 doubles, 19 homers, 64 RBI’s and 52 runs scored. A great season through 74 games and the Red Sox are going back in forth with the Rays for the top of the division. Just yesterday Devers had a 3-run, 451 foot, first inning homers off Gerrit Cole. This type of hitting has been Devers all year big hits and often extra base hits in big moments. The Red Sox are now 6-0 against the Yankees this year and Devers and his teammates have dominated their New York foes. This season stats are eerily similar to those of 2019 for Devers, where he hit .311/.361/.555 with 54 doubles, 32 homers, 115 RBI’s and 129 runs scored. He is well on pace to match all of the counting statistics, but a positive from the little worse slash is that he is getting on base more. If he gets really hot and hits for a high average for a month or so you could see a significant rise in the average, and due to his heightening walk numbers the on base percentage as well. Devers continues to show why he is one of the best players in the MLB and he and teammate Xander Bogaerts form the best left side of the infield in the entire league, I am excited to see where Devers’ career will lead him.
