Carlos Delgado: A forgotten star

In the late 90s and early 2000s the MLB and especially the AL East was flush with stars. Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter, among many others headlined a division that was one of the strongest in baseball. But the Toronto Blue Jays, after wining back to back World Series in 1992-1993 had struggled staying relevant at the height of the Yankees Dynasty and the Red Sox return to glory. One player, Carlos Delgado was so underrated just due to the team he was on. From 1998-2004 Delgado was one of the best hitters in the game, he hit .292/.408/.579 averaging 40 homers and 125 RBI’s. He was only recognized as an All Star twice, and one of those years was arguably one of the best of the era. In the year 2000, Delgado hit .344/.470/.664 with 57 doubles 41 homers and 137 RBI’s. But his team finished 3rd behind the aforementioned Yankees and Red Sox, so he only finished 4th in MVP voting. His defense was never as good as his hitting but being an average defender at first base doesn’t affect a players value that much. If Delgado was on the Yanks or the Sox I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Hall of Fame. His counting stats are very close to Cooperstown level at 473 homers, 2038 hits, 1512 RBI’s, but he was undervalued consistently and this led to him in my opinion being one of the most overlooked players of his time.
