Mike Moustakas was a prized prospect of the long and painful Royals tanking campaign. He along with Alex Gordon, Billy Butler, and Eric Hosmer were all high ranked prospects at the turn of the decade. Hosmer has been a reliable first basemen for the Royals and recently the Padres. Gordon was great for a period of time but has since become an oft-injured defense first outfielder.
Butler was a great hitter but didn’t last very long as he had old player skills which often become a career great but short. Moustakas was a bit of all these things. His defense has always been good, he had a great peak and has some old player skills which have developed. For his career he has hit .251/.310/.441 with 184 homers and 569 RBI’s also totaling 492 runs and 1048 hits. From 2011-2014 he hit .236/.290/.379 averaging 17 homers and 63 RBI’s.
His breakout came in 2015 when he won the World Series with the Royals. He hit .284/.348/.470 with 22 homers and 82 RBI’s was an All Star, and even got some MVP votes finishing 21st in the voting. He got unlucky the next season when he and Alex Gordon collided behind third base after 27 games. Since 2017 he hit .258/.320/.496 averaging 37 homers and 98 RBI’s with the Royals, Brewers, and Reds. He has even moved to second base and been just as good defensively. His hitting in 2015 really helped the Royals make a deep post season run and his continued success helped them get some quality prospects at the deadline in 2018. Thanks for reading.
