Larry Walker: A great player who deserved the Hall of Fame

Larry Walker was an outfielder in the 1990s and early 2000s who played for the Expos, Rockies, and Cardinals. His best years were with the Rockies in the late 90s. I think this is why it took so long for him to get elected to the Hall of Fame. Coors Field is infamous for the offensive boosts it gives its players due to the air quality of the stadium being in the Rocky Mountain range area.

Larry Walker was often dismissed as someone who all of his offensive prowess was deemed simply because of the ballpark he played 81 of his games in. He hit .313/.400/.565 for his career with 383 homers and 1311 RBI’s. He was a stolen base threat for a bunch of his career amassing 230 stolen bases. Other notable counting stats include 471 doubles and 1355 runs scored.

For a three year stretch from 1997-1999 you could argue that there was no better player in the MLB. He hit .369/.451/.689 averaging 47 doubles and 44 homers per 162 games. Also averaging 144 runs, 124 RBI’s and 23 stolen bases per 162. He was also a great fielder in his career winning 7 gold gloves for his efforts. He also was a 5 time all star, and won an MVP at the start of his other worldly tear in 1997.

During that season in 1997 his home road splits were similar, at home he hit .384/.460/.709 with 20 homers and 68 RBI’s on the road he hit .346/.443/.733 with 29 homers and 62 RBI’s. As you can see his average benefited at home but his power was better away from Coors which was abnormal. His .346 road average would have been good for 4th in the MLB. Larry Walker thoroughly deserved his plaque and it was a shame it took as long as it did. Thanks for reading.
