Nomar Garciaparra: Injuries Cost him Pt. 2

Nomar Garciaparra, or Nomah as they called him in Boston was a shortstop who was considered the best 3 shortstops for generations. Nomah, A-Rod, and Jeter were the best of the best during that stretch and for a two year stretch you could make an argument that Nomah was the top dog. But then he got injured and was never the same, he got traded by his beloved Red Sox and bounced around thereafter.

But from 1997-2003 he was other worldly. He hit .325/.372/.557 averaging 121 runs, 48 doubles, 8 triples, 30 homers, 117 RBI’s, and 14 stolen bases per 162 games. His OBP wasn’t great as he didn’t walk much, but he got hit by quite a few pitches over that time. He was also an outstanding defender, he averaged 1.5 dWAR over that stretch and gave his time 41.1 wins (WAR).

His best two seasons during that stretch were 1999-2000. He hit .365/.426/.601, video game numbers and for a shortstop that was unbelievable. Not to mention he averaged over 25 homers and 100 RBI’s and was valued at 14 wins. In 2004 he was injured while on the Red Sox and he was traded at mid-season to the Cubs. From 2004-2009, his last year, he hit .291/.343/.446 which are not terrible. He also only averaged 84 games a year. The most he played in was 122. Injuries took away a great player from a Hall of Fame career. Thanks for reading.
